Albergaria-a-Velha

The territory that today makes up the municipality of Albergaria-a-Velha has been human occupation since prehistory, as the remains and archaeological sites demonstrate.

Only in 1855 the municipality of Albergaria-a-Velha would take over the entirety of its present territory, with the parishes we know.

The municipality of Albergaria-a-Velha benefits from an exceptional geostrategic position in the region and in the country, being crossed by four of the most important road routes in the country (A1, A25, A29 and IC2), which allows quick access to the metropolitan areas of Lisbon and Porto, to the ports of Aveiro, Leixões and Figueira da Foz, to the interior of the country and from there to the whole European area.

The Municipality is part of CIRA - Intermunicipal Community of the Region of Aveiro, a public institution of associative nature and territorial scope that aims to achieve common interests to the municipalities that integrate it.

Along with privileged access roads, Albergaria-a-Velha benefits from multiple services and infrastructures that provide well-being and convenience to its approximately 24,840 inhabitants (2021 census).

In tourism, there are several chances of visitors to the county. From routes that allow you to know the natural and built landscapes, to the industrial heritage, there are vast testimonies and riches that you will find here. In architectural heritage, for example, the highlight goes to the stately houses and farms that predominate in the streets of Albergaria. As far as natural heritage is concerned, you can't miss the Pateira de Frossos Intrepretação Centre and get to know the regional ecological diversity.

In gastronomy the highlight is the roasted piglet, the rojões, the eels and various dishes of lamprey, also highlighting the sweets with the famous "Turks".
