Alvaiázere, a town and municipality, owes its name to the Arabs, who named it Al-Bai-Zir or Alva-Varze, according to the different sources. Served by a hillsy mountain, punctuated by vineyards, olive groves, corn fields and cheerful white and ochre homes from where, in the west, you can see the valley of the Nabão River.
The signs of the past are still quite evident throughout the municipality of Alvaiázere. Here is built heritage as manorhouses, manor houses and menagem towers.
The economic basis of this region is also agriculture, favored by fertile soils, well-irrigated valleys and floodplains and the slopes covered with vineyards and olive trees, which have always been important aids to its population.
Alzaiázere is a rapidly growing municipality, which offers its populations and visitors a wide range of infrastructure and services necessary for its well-being and convenience, but also vast hypotheses with regard to tourism, among natural heritage, archaeological, pre-industrial and architectural-religious.
To access the municipality, you can do so by the complementary itinerary IC3 that connects Coimbra to Tomar, and by the section of the A13 that connects to the city of Coimbra. It is about 25 km from Tomar and 60 km from Coimbra and Leira, considered centers of development in terms of business and teaching.
In gastronomy, it is considered the "capital of chícharo" and it is this legume that predominates in the traditional dishes of the region. But in a land where agriculture is queen, the regional products given by the land reign on the table of the people of Alvaiázere.
