The municipality of Bombarral is inserted in a fertile agricultural region, fruit of the work of the monks of Alcobaça, pear trees, settlers and farmers and also of nature itself.
It consists of four parishes, has about 91.7 km2 and 12,746 inhabitants . It has a privileged geographical location in the center of the Western Tourism Region, 75 km from Lisbon and 20 km from the Atlantic Ocean. It is bordered to the north by the village of Óbidos and the city of Caldas da Rainha, to the west by the municipalities of Lourinhã and Peniche, to the south by the city of Torres Vedras and to the east by the neighboring village, Cadaval.
Currently the A8 is its great road communication route, alongside the railway line, which allows train connection to the whole country.
Although the county is recent, its history goes back to prehistory. This is proof of the archaeological remains of human fixation such as the New Grotto, lapa do Suão, the Neolithic fortification of Columbeira and the Castro de São Mamede.
With the formation of Portugal, in 1153 its lands became part of the monks of Cistermen. Later, here passed and spent several kings of Portugal and Spain. It was the scene of the struggle for independence at the Battle of Roliça, in which the Anglo-Luso army, commanded by General Wellesley, future Duke of Wellington, won.
Thus, Bombarral cannot dissociate itself from the formation of the nation and its struggle for independence and liberation, leaving us architectural evidence such as stately houses, small mansions such as Quinta dos Loridos, the Palace of henriques (now Bombarral City Council), the Gorjão Palace and the Solar dos Mello e Castro.
The religious heritage is also very present in the municipality, distributed by the various parishes. Already in the 20th century, the Eduardo Brazão Theater and the Railway Station were built, which brought dynamics to the region.
Another highlight in the county, more recent, is the Buddha Eden, a space with 35 hectares, conceived and designed by commander José Berardo, in response to the destruction of Bayman, in what was one of the greatest acts of cultural barbarism, which erased from memory masterpieces of the late period of the Art of Gandhara.
In the region there are also a series of walking tours or the municipal forest, which you can take advantage of for relaxed moments and get to know the history and natural corners of the municipality.
In terms of tourism, there is a predominance of the enotourism and events dedicated to the rock pear of the West, reasons to visit the Bombarral and be surprised by what it has to offer.
