Castro Daire

The history of the municipality of Castro Daire is lost a little in time, not knowing for sure since when this vast area was occupied by man. It is known, however, that by the time of the Neolithic period the territory would already be intensely populated.

The municipality occupies an area equivalent to 380 km2, distributed by its 16 parishes with about 13,736 residents. It confines to the north with the municipalities of Tarouca, Lamego, Resende and Cinfães; to the east with Vila Nova de Paiva; to the south with Viseu and to the west with S. Pedro do Sul and Arouca.

The municipality boasts a vast and diverse landscape and architectural heritage that characterizes it as a municipality rich in testimonies of the past.

Among the architectural landscape stands out the Church of the Hermitage of the twelfth century and the Roman Inscription of the Penedo de Lamas - Moledo. During the 18th century there was in Castro Daire a great period of expansion, of great importance for the history of the municipality. Landmarks of this height are the Mother Church of Castro Daire, the House of the Fence, the Chapel of the Frarrancas, the Solar dos Aguilares and the Solar dos Mendonças, all of them located in the village, or even the noble houses of Grijó do Gafanhão, Farejinhas and the village of Mões.

With regard to natural heritage, we have the Pombeira Waterfall and the Montemuro Mountain Range, with its wide range of points of interest.

In economic terms, the practice of agriculture prevails in the municipality, which, with technological evolution, also resulted in the ethnological collection of Castro Daire, which allows us to take a trip to discover the beginnings of the main form of population support in this region.

A place of unique expressiveness, worth visiting.
