Constância

In the meeting of the Zêzere with the Tagus was born the old Wane, land whose history is linked to the rivers and activities they provided: river transport, shipbuilding and repair, crossing and fishing. D. Sebastião raised it to the village and created the municipality in 1571, recognizing the development that had already reached. D. Maria II, in 1836, named her for Constancy, in honor of the constancy that its inhabitants showed in supporting the liberal cause.

Land of seduction and poetry, says the tradition that welcomed Luís de Camões for some time, and the memory of the epic is part of the soul of the village.

The arrival of the railway in the 19th century and road transport in the mid-20th century, along with the construction of dams, caused the decay of traditional activities and the village had to change its life, turning to the tourist use of its natural beauty, the charm of its landscapes and the tranquility of its rivers.

From ancient times, it holds the memory of fishermen and faina, recalled in the Feast of Our Lady of Boa Viagem, one of the greatest events of its kind in Portugal.

The municipality integrates the parishes of Montalvo and Santa Margarida da Coutada, one on each side of the Tagus. In Montalvo, which preserves the rural character, in a landscape of farms, vegetable gardens and olive groves, is in full activity an Industrial Zone that creates jobs and fixed population. where the Environmental Park and the Tropical Butterfly Garden are located, which provide excellent conditions for leisure activities, outdoors and nature knowledge.
