Ferreira do Zêzere

Land ruled by religious orders, Ferreira do Zêzere has a relatively recent history. Still, disem of a diverse archaeological and historical heritage, religious, architectural and cultural of which are example the Grotto of Avecasta, the Pentagonal Tower of Dornes, the Temple of Our Lady of The Weeby, the Church of the Sands, the Pelourinhos of Pias and Beautiful Waters, among other elements and classified heritage. Over time, Ferreira has been the subject of major impasses in its development, such as the plague and the French invasions.

It is a territory of great richness and diversity, with substantially different landscapes, by the type of forest, by vegetation, soils, agriculture and by the natural and landscape beauty provided by the River Zêzere and the vast forest spot.

The entire region in which this municipality is included is very rugged and with varied geological structure. Most of them are land from the disaggregation of shales, quartezitos and grês, existing on the outskirts of the village very fertile lowland lands. From the topographic point of view, the village is situated on a small "crest" with an average altitude of 350m. The only depression with greater significance is located north of the cluster, to which corresponds a water line that makes this area wetter. The relief did not, therefore, have a direct and decisive influence on the development of the village. Although the embryonic nucleus appears on the head, its expansion was done in a radial way, in the sense of all cardinal points, along the tracing of communication paths directly marked by the sinuosity proper to the elevations.

The municipality is limited to the source by the River Zêzere, which gave it its name, and in which is located an important work of hydraulics - the Albufeira do Castelo de Bode. The whole region has a very rich underground in water, except the Chãos area.

From local production, the highlight is honey, olive oil and olive oil production, which elevate the county to the "egg capital".
In gastronomy, stands out the roasted kid, fish and crayfish of the river, accompanied by the typical migas. To finish the meal, broad beans mousse or pumpkin pudding and walnuts are the main choices. Regional cakes Good Husbands and Good Wives are also recommended.

Due to its location and proximity to the water, Ferreira do Zêzere is a place of excellence for water sports. But in the leisure area, you can also enjoy its river beaches and hiking trails, in the middle of a breathtaking landscape, which deserves your visit.
