Ourém

From its first name Auren, its historical nucleus was the Castle of Ourém but, due to the great destruction caused by the Earthquake of 1755, the population moved to the valley. The village, called Vila Nova, was burned down by the French army, having only resisted a few houses.
In 1841, the seat of the municipality changed definitively from the historic area of the castle to the valley, where it is still.

Currently, the settlement is characteristic of being dispersed, with a marked tendency to decrease the number of inhabitants of rural areas and small places, for the benefit of an increase in urban centers, namely the cities of Ourém and Fatima and the villages of Caxarias, Freixianda, Vilar dos Prazeres, and Olival. According to the 2021 census, it has a population of 44,538 people spread over 13 parishes.

With regard to transport-related infrastructure, external accessibility is characterized by road access to the A1 and IC9, and by rail access to the northern line, where the station of the village of Caxarias has particular importance.
In public infrastructure and services, it is endowed with a good support network for resident and visiting citizens, through schools, banking institutions, health services, among others.

At the economic level, the business fabric is mainly made up of small and medium-sized enterprises, with a particular focus on manufacturing, construction and public works, trade and hospitality.

Consisting of beautiful natural landscapes, as is the example of the agroal river beach, coming from a spring that flows into the River Nabão, and characterized by a lot of tradition and culture, both at the patrimonial and religious level, Ourém values its identity and the role of people in its development.

Santuário de Fátima_Ourém

It is in this municipality that the most important Sanctuary of Portugal is located: the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima , which annually gathers thousands of devotees and pilgrims who are here to say their prayers. This is one of the most visited religious tourist destinations in the world.

Although it is markedly religious, the city of Ourém has several green spaces and snack parks, where you can take advantage of the proximity to nature to rest or walk. Its proximity to Lisbon, or other cities of the Middle Tagus, allows you to enjoy a network of sea or river beaches, where it is possible to practice all kinds of water sports.

In the county, also enjoy a complete meal with regional cuisine. Taste the sausages, the hatchet, the olive oil or meat soups, the dried, the chícharos or the stewed lamb. Accompany your meal with medieval wine from the region. For dessert, do not dispense with sweet cooks, bow cake or quince jam, among many other delicacies and sweets.
