Sabugal is a municipality in the District of Guarda, in the province of Beira Alta, Centre region and sub-region of Beiras and Serra da Estrela, with about 11,280 inhabitants, subdivided into 30 parishes. The municipality is bordered to the north by the municipality of Almeida, to the east by Spain, to the south by Penamacor, to the southwest by Fundão, to the west by Belmonte and to the northwest by Guarda. It is in Terras de Riba-Côa, as well as Pinhel, Almeida, Mêda and Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo.
Despite not being a particularly favourable terrain for human occupation, since antiquity the region has shown signs of important humanisation, with archaeological remains dating back to the Neolithic and Chalcolithic. Part of the Alto Côa, it belongs to a region irrigated by water lines tributary to the upper course of the Côa River, which could be an added value for the occupation of the territories by the populations.
In gastronomy, there are dishes and products of the region such as sausages, broths: dry beans, drained broth, dry soup, cabbage soup, slaughter broth, broth, soup of horns, broth of gravanços, broth, among others; kid and lamb, wild rabbit, wild boar, trout from the river Côa and cheeses. The main desserts are rice pudding, "filhós", "farófias", "bolo saloio", "esquecidos", cornmeal, tapioca and honey.
The municipality can be reached by motorway from several district capitals of the country, such as Aveiro, Coimbra, Lisbon, Porto, Vila Real and Viseu.
