Torres Novas

The region of Torres Novas has shown interest to man since the Paleolithic, when our ancestors settled on the edge of the Almonda River in caves, such as Buraca da Moura, Oliveira and Lapa da Bugalheira.
Later, it was the Romans who settled in the region and remained there for several centuries, building several villages, of which stands out the Cardium Village, considered a National Monument since 1967.

It was, however, in the 12th century that the territory, at the time known as "Turris", began to resemble what we know of it today. Due to the various clashes that occurred in the region, the castle, symbol of the city, and the village, were several times rebuilt. During the Middle Ages, Torres Novas became an area of strong economic and demographic growth.

The municipality of Torres Novas has a wide amount of stories to tell and heritage to visit, left over several centuries. We can, however, also count on a natural character of great beauty, with great landscape contrasts, valued and preserved through the creation of Parks and Nature Reserves, and in the middle of the Serra D'Aire, 16km from the city, we can find traces of dinosaur footprints, dates back to the Middle Jurassic.

Still in the city, enjoy a walk by the river, or the routes that make you know the wonders that this county hides. Also venture to the Almonda caves and walk along the paths through the various underground streams that originate at the source of the Almonda River.

Handicrafts play an important role in the local economy, although there is already a business fabric of relevance in the municipality, which allows other forms of subsistence to the inhabitants of Torres Novas, along with restoration and tourism.

The municipality is endowed with good access and has road transport that connects you to several points of the country to the north and south. In terms of services and infrastructure, you should find all the necessary ones to the day to day in Torres or in the border councils, a few kilometers away.

In gastronomy, the highlight goes to the goat dishes, the rice pudding and the dishes made with eels. In the sweets, delight in various slice cakes, bean pastries, breads of various flavors, sticks from Torres Novas, among others.
